About

The hospital setting and long-term care facilities can be a challenging environment for patients and their families. There is often a disruption of ordinary routine, leading to feelings of distress. Isolation from the outside world and the separation from loved ones has only been made worse as a result of the Pandemic. The usual stresses associated with this rapidly changing and uncertain environment are magnified when combined with an inability to communicate in a common language.

We found that residents in skilled nursing facilities thrive and flourish when engaged in therapeutic leisure activity. In fact, there is evidence to suggest that with such meaningful engagements, the  recovery process  is significantly improved. However, limited-english proficient residents are often unable to fully benefit from social interaction due to the communicative obstacles that they face. Not only are these individuals disconnected from the rest of their family, friends, and homelife,  but they also have fewer opportunities to connect with fellow residents.

Therefore, to address this tremendous need, we have established the Rosa Amarilla project. We are an organization comprised of volunteers who are passionate about impacting the health and wellbeing of individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds who may feel isolated from others while residing in medical facilities. Our volunteers engage in conversations as well as activities in the native languages of each resident to create a mutually supportive relationship.  We hope to  positively impact the lives of individuals who might otherwise be isolated and neglected through a deficiency in language communication skills.

Board of Directors

Hello!

I am Camelia, the founder of the Rosa Amarilla Project. I created this organization in my senior year of high school, titling it in honor of the symbol of friendship.  I truly value establishing connections with people of all different backgrounds, and am passionate about learning languages.
